How is asbestos
removed safely
Asbestos should only be removed by the relevantly
qualified and licensed persons so as to minimize
risk to others. As from July 1 2006 new laws
are being enforced regarding this as to protect people
from being exposed to asbestos fibres. Thus any asbestos
removal should only be undertaken buy the relevantly
qualified licensed persons so as to guarantee you
and your families health and safety. A small price
to pay for peace of mind and easier to cope with
than loosing a loved one via a cruel and painful
death. A great deal of training/licensing is undertaken
to assure this so as to protect other people becoming
exposed. This level of expertise is only achievable
through these means and should not be ignored.

What to do if I suspect asbestos is
being removed illegally in or around my neighbourhood or
home
Ask or make contact with the person or contractor removing
asbestos and request to see some identification i.e.; name
address contact person and asbestos license. Any such qualified
person will do this with minimal fuss. Observe whether
they are wearing personal protective equipment such as disposable overalls,
gloves and relevant respirators (face masks) if they are displaying warning signs
concerning asbestos removal and carrying out work in a manner to reduce breakage
and dust associated with breakage i.e.; asbestos is not to be thrown into bins
or bags from great heights as this causes dust and fibers to escape. Remove washing
etc from clothes lines, stay indoors, stop fans/air conditioner etc close and
seal off any open doors or windows and should any of the above matters not be
to your satisfaction contact the Dept of industrial relations urgently and request
their utmost urgent attention to inspect or monitor the situation or advise
Australian Asbestos Removal Services of the job details.
Why is there still a problem?
Although asbestos is no longer used in construction of
buildings there is still cause for great concern. Asbestos
use has decreased year on year since the early 1980’s but not completely banned until 2003. It can therefore be
present in any building constructed or refurbished between the 1950’s and
1992 .White asbestos continued to be used until its ban in 2003 . It is estimated
that about half a million domestic premises contain some form of asbestos and
about a quarter of a million non domestic structures such as offices, schools,
jail’s and other government buildings etc.
Which illnesses does asbestos exposure
cause.
THE REAL ANSWERS
THE MAIN ASBESTOS RELATED DISEASES THAT CAN KILL ARE:
Mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining around the chest (pleura)
or of the abdomen (peritoneum). This tumour thickens the lining and eventually
encloses the lung or stomach .It is very painful and invariably fatal, certainly
a horrible death.
Asbestosis- Progressive scarring (fibrosis) of the
lung, leading to painful breathlessness, and eventually death. The first symptoms
can appear 10 to 15 years after exposure. There is no known cure and if affected
will most certainly result in death.
Lung Cancer, tumours of the bronchial tubes
and lungs, occurring up to 15 to 30 years after first exposure, and normally
fatal.
The risk increases greatly in people who smoke up to a 90% chance but reduces
greatly the moment a smoker ceases to smoke by approx 45%. Experts estimate that
at least one in ten cases of cancer are caused by exposure to asbestos
Other cancers, upon recent medical research, researches
have discovered that asbestos can be a possible main link as to the cause of
other cancers such as cancers of the larynx, stomach, large intestine, ovarian
cancer, breast cancer, cancer of the kidney and bone marrow.
Other indications of asbestos exposure are :
Pleural effusion, a collection of fluid within the chest but
outside the lung. Pleural plaques, patches of thickening of
the lining of the chest wall and over the diaphragm. |
