Who is most likely at risk

Those people who have ever renovated a home built before 1992 those that have had roofs or walls damaged by way of impact climbed on or played around asbestos containing products (fences roofs etc) most commonly those people that fail to understand and  wish to ignore the health risk associate with asbestos.

How does asbestos became harmful

Asbestos should never be sawn smashed, drilled broken up ground filed or dumped in an area that is not certified for the safe disposal of such when  the needle like fibers or dust become airborne they mostly enter the airways resulting in asbestos exposure or float onto other surfaces such as food which if digested will result in digestive related exposure. Skin which also has been exposed to asbestos can suffer forms of skin cancer or asbestos warts.

What should I do to minimize the risk to myself , family or friends

Have the suspected material around your home checked by a licensed asbestos removal company to verify that it is a asbestos containing material and its stability in its surrounding environment prevent children and other people being exposed to such risks by having it removed as soon as possible by a licensed removal contractor and keeping people clear of areas that are suspected to contain asbestos until confirmation has been noted that it is not a asbestos containing material (checked and tested by  asbestos licensed persons).

How many people die as a result of asbestos.

We are dealing with possibly the biggest occupational health problem ever encounted in Australia, currently  over 3,500 people die annually from asbestos-related diseases; around 1,800 of those are from mesothelioma. The annual number of deaths is expected to peak somewhere in the range 4,000 to 5,000 (although the actual peak figure could be even higher) between the years 2011 and 2015.

How is asbestos removed safely

Asbestos should only be removed by the relevantly qualified and licensed persons so as to minimize risk to others. As from July 1 2006 new  laws are being enforced regarding this as to protect people from being exposed to asbestos fibres. Thus any asbestos removal should only be undertaken buy the relevantly qualified licensed persons so as to guarantee you and your families health and safety. A small price to pay for peace of mind and easier to cope with than loosing a loved one via a cruel and painful death. A great deal of training/licensing is undertaken to assure this so as to protect other people becoming exposed. This level of expertise is only achievable through these means and should not be ignored.

AUSTRALIAN ASBESTOS REMOVAL SERVICES SPECIALISE IN  EFFECTIVE SAFE REMOVAL PROCEDURES AND ALL REMOVAL WORK IS CARRIED OUT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE national code of practice for the management and control of asbestos in workplaces (nohsc:2018 2005) asbestos management code; and the national code of practice for the safe removal of asbestos 2nd edition (nohsc:2002,2005) asbestos removal code and only undertake work managing and using the most recent and up to date codes of practice.

What to do if I suspect asbestos is being removed illegally in or around my neighbourhood or home

Ask or make contact with the person or contractor removing asbestos and request to see some identification i.e.; name address contact person and asbestos license. Any such qualified person will do this with minimal fuss. Observe whether they are  wearing personal protective equipment such as disposable overalls, gloves and relevant respirators (face masks) if they are displaying warning signs concerning asbestos removal and carrying out work in a manner to reduce breakage and dust associated with breakage i.e.; asbestos is not to be thrown into bins or bags from great heights as this causes dust and fibers to escape. Remove washing etc from clothes lines, stay indoors, stop fans/air conditioner etc close and seal off any open doors or windows and should any of the above matters not be to your satisfaction contact the Dept of industrial relations urgently and request their utmost  urgent attention to inspect or monitor the situation or advise Australian Asbestos Removal Services of the job details.

Why is there still a problem?

Although asbestos is no longer used in construction of buildings there is still cause for great concern. Asbestos use has decreased year on year since the early 1980’s but  not completely banned until 2003. It can therefore be present in any building constructed or refurbished between the 1950’s and 1992 .White asbestos continued to be used until its ban in 2003 . It is estimated that about half a million domestic premises contain some form of asbestos and about a quarter of a million non domestic structures such as offices, schools, jail’s and other government buildings etc.

Which illnesses does asbestos exposure cause.

THE REAL ANSWERS

THE MAIN ASBESTOS RELATED DISEASES THAT CAN KILL ARE:

Mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining around the chest (pleura) or of the abdomen (peritoneum). This tumour thickens the lining and eventually encloses the lung or stomach .It is very painful and invariably fatal, certainly a horrible death.

Asbestosis- Progressive scarring (fibrosis) of the lung, leading to painful breathlessness, and eventually death. The first symptoms can appear 10 to 15 years after exposure. There is no known cure and if affected will most certainly result in death.

Lung Cancer, tumours of the bronchial tubes and lungs, occurring up to 15 to 30 years after first exposure, and normally fatal.
The risk increases greatly in people who smoke up to a 90% chance but reduces greatly the moment a smoker ceases to smoke by approx 45%. Experts estimate that at least one in ten cases of cancer are caused by exposure to asbestos

Other cancers,
upon recent medical research, researches have discovered that asbestos can be a possible main link as to the cause of other cancers such as cancers of the larynx, stomach, large intestine, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, cancer of the kidney and bone marrow.

Other indications of asbestos exposure are
:

Pleural effusion, a collection of fluid within the chest but outside the lung. Pleural plaques, patches of thickening of the lining of the chest wall and over the diaphragm.
